Hold the British Museum accountable for copyright infringement!

Some of you may have seen this in the news, but a buddy of mine has had her translation work stolen by the British Museum. Yilin’s translations of feminist poet Qiu Jin has been taken and used in multiple formats in the physical exhibition as well as used in the exhibition book with no citation or credit attached. They did not inform her, they did not get permission, they did not credit her, and they did not pay her.

The British Museum’s correspondence with Yilin has been outright atrocious. From Yilin’s crowd justice:

They initially claimed they had just forgotten to credit me in the exhibit and offered to acknowledge me, and to send me a permission form, whilst emphasizing how other contributors let them use their work for free or at a low cost. Before I even had a chance to respond, especially given the 8-hr time difference, they contacted me 24 hours later to tell me that they had removed all my translations from the exhibit. […]

After lying to her and the public about the apology, they have continued to misrepresent the situation to journalists and treat Yilin, whose work they STOLE, like garbage. They have only corresponded with them in a condescending manner with coercive language regarding the work that they stole. Yilin is now hoping to raise at least £15,000 by July 10th in order to instruct expert lawyers in London to initiate a claim of infringement of their copyright and moral rights.

We cannot allow the British Museum to continue their legacy of theft, if they are not held responsible, then this cycle will only repeat itself. Additionally, if she is successful, she hopes to donate at least 50% of the funds back into the community.

Please share! (Read about the full thing below, and if you’re up for it, Here is the original tweet thread describing everything as it happened)

This has been infuriating me since the start. If you're on Twitter, you may have seen the whole enraging thing, but basically they stole, and then thanked Yilin for "contributing," and then eventually offered like 150 pound stipend for the dozens of lines they'd stolen--they'd paid the white people whose names are on the exhibit more than nine hundred thousand dollars--and now they're really hoping everyone will just look away.

seriously the entire modus operandi of the british museum is that they steal EVERYTHING if it's not glued down the goddamn BM will steal it

So far one of the biggest differences between reddit and tumblr for me is that there's no pressure to create a "good" post. There's no button to reduce the number of notes a post has (unless you're the source of one of those notes, which I mean hey, you gave me these imaginary internet numbers in the first place, feel free to rescind them for any reason).

There's no bots that will automatically delete my post because I didn't have 10,000 tumbloints, users don't seem to come out of the woodwork to disparage your post if it doesn't meet some invisible standard of content (and if they do you can just block them)

I've had a reddit account for 14 years and I think you can already get a better picture of who I am as a person in my less then 12 hours of tumblr shitblogging.

Anyway, thanks tumblr friends for being so welcoming.

Hi folks! UPM, a Finnish forest industry company, is planning on cutting down forest in Rokansaari — an island that spans five square kilometers in Lake Saimaa. Rokansaari has often been described to be a hidden gem and a paradise island, known for its natural sandy beaches, eskers, and lush beautiful pine forests. It’s very popular among travellers, boaters, tourists, all kinds of people really. Some of the forests on the island are even 130 years old.

The areas that UPM is planning on cutting down are labelled as a protected area, but that really only means that you can’t build things there. “Careful cutting” of these forests is fine. Do you know what UPM’s definition of “careful cutting” is, according to their previous work in other parts of Rokansaari?

image

…Yeah. And now they’re back to cut down the rest of the area they have.

Anyway, Greenpeace has made a petition to urge UPM to not cut down Rokansaari’s forests! They’ve succeeded in telling UPM off before in 2016, when they managed to keep another similar island safe. I hope they’ll be able to do it again, so I’m sharing the petition! I’m not sure if non-Finns can sign it, but if not, sharing it would be enough. We need more people on this case!

if you can take action and pass it along

Only for it to transform into grief as he realizes his father will never know this or anything else because he’s dead.

I loved this in the novel so - that his family and friends don’t get killed by the Emperor or anything; it’s a local aristo who has not even in his wildest thoughts coveted the throne. To the emperor, the man would be a nobody. But to the Gus (and the Wangs and the Lius and the Yes) he is the end of all their worlds. It’s a brutal lesson in violence and power. That is why it is so fitting that Gu Jiusi in the novel eventually pursues military power and achieves it; this is a horrifying pointed lesson that no matter how smart, how rich you are without power you will not be allowed to prosper or even to live. (Liu Yuru becomes a mighty merchant queen whose money can support GJS in his endeavors and shore up his power but it’s a symbiotic endeavor because she would not be able to make money in peace if it wasn’t for his accumulating power. It becomes a virtuous cycle for them.)

You know, by now I think that between this and LBFAD, this screenwriter should be hired to adapt every awesome web novel. I’ve rarely seen someone do it as well as her. I am especially impressed because LBFAD was based on a novel I did not like and like Minglan or Joy of Life, I find the drama superior in part because I did not love the novel. But this - this is an adaptation of a novel that I adore and do you know how rare it is to get a worthy adaptation of a great novel? I can’t think of any recent one except for Ever Night 1 and the Untamed.

sol1056

there seem to be two major hallmarks of LBFAD and this one (in terms of screenwriter touches): the two characters each develop/grow in parallel (no one character gets sacrificed so the story can focus on the other exclusively), and the characters talk about stuff. The rare times they don’t, the screenwriter works hard to give us legitimate reasons a character can’t or won’t speak of something – but more often than not, the screenwriter lets the story push the characters into confronting an issue and talking it through.

there’s noble idiocy moments in each story, but they’re rarely more than moments, it makes sense in the plot, it pushes the plot forward, and is true to the characters. so not really idiocy, after all.
